Very often when we contemplate a bare garden, we are tempted to hire a professional landscaper to design and maintain a garden or landscape

. We feel overwhelmed with the idea that it's too much work, we don't know how to do it, we don't feel empowered to take on a project of redoing what a previous owner has planned, or how to make the first step towards what we would like our garden to look like.

The most beautiful backyards are filled with whims that the gardener has had, or the variety of sales or supplies from the local garden center. There is a wow factor when you walk into the unique creation of someone who has poured heart and soul in creating and adding or cultivating plants or bushes. A professional landscaper will implement a plan that stays the same year after year, plants die and are replaced, bushes stay without any personality. However, at the hand of a gardener, plants and bushes take on a different character because they are mixed and matched, they have expressed their happiness by blooming and reproducing, they've bonded with other plants that have shared their space, all to add an eclectic feel to the garden that would be unique. One way to start is by purchasing concrete blocks from the local nursery to define clean lines, then border the pathway with beds. Suddenly, the back yard takes on a different personality as it is defined. A visit to the local nursery might imagine what plants would look like, what different colors would look like together, what bushes may look good with what types of containers next to it. A set of stairs will take on a different look with the pots with flowers that are put at each end. A patio may take on a different look with a swing. A yard may take on a feel of romance with an added bench. A fountain can be enhanced with the addition of a favorite statue.

Everything that can be created begins one step at a time, one vision at a time, one look at a time. Once the first step is made to create a flower bed, a patio, or even a walkway, each step brings on an added idea, an added vision that changes the atmosphere. There is never a completed look as it's always changing, blooming, growing. But the hardest part is deciding that landscaping companies are great for a certain look, but for an individual and unique character that will distinguish from all the others, is the vision of the gardener who starts one step at a time.
