Prolonging Life-is It Really A Health Care Benefit?
There are multiple things that contemporary medicine has to offer people and when
we look at those living in other countries without proper healthcare or even vital drinking water for example things are tougher and so life expectancy is shorter than people who live in the US. The US is one of the more superior countries when it comes to healthcare advancements in medicinal technology but this is adding up to more expensive healthcare system in general.
Many of the current advancements tend to prolong life but the quality of that life is something that has been considered for awhile. Some of us have to suffer with serious illness like cancer or diabetes but there are advancements and care that focuses on making life last a little longer. When an ill person lives longer it is most likely that they will simply become sicker and therefore require more treatment which actually costs more.
Those of us who have been fortunate to manage their health during their life have figured out there are additional ailments that can arise for those who live to up to one hundred years. These people may need to be cared for and require constant help which means having to pay more money and if it is even the case they do not need this then they will most likely need to be treated for common elderly disease, such as dementia.
These are compounded financially and even though every person doesn't live to the age of 100 years, one must wonder when do all these life saving techniques add up rather than becoming more of an expense with little benefit to people who are immobile, blind, or simply cannot enjoy the basic life functions.
To say the least this is a controversial issue but when you look at those who are 90 and cannot even remember where they are you ought to wonder if saving them from heart failure at 70 was really the right thing to do. This is a difficult issue but one needs careful examination. It is, in essence, as if we are going to put our sick animals to sleep so he can avoid pain but we are going to let Grandma live in pain, we have to ask why? Does this really make a lot of sense?
