Prom Safety

As summer approaches, it means we are closer not only to summer vacation for students but also prom season for high school juniors and seniors

. Prom is a wonderful and historically great way to cap off ones high school career.

However, the annual prom season is also notorious for causing stress for parents as their kids are out for the night partying with friends and classmates.

For parents and students alike, the federal government, through the Center for Disease Control, has a list of prom safety tips available here to keep the event a safe and memorable one.

The tips include everything from wearing stylish, yet comfortable, shoes, to staying away from alcohol or drugs, and testing cosmetics before they are worn.

One of the most important tips is to Make sure parents or guardians know where you are all times in case of an emergency. Call a parent, guardian, or someone you trust in case plans change or you need help.

Something to consider for those prom attendees and anxious parents waiting at home is a smartphone safety app, like Gabe The Guardian, so they can check in from the various stops that night or alert parents in case of an emergency.

Smartphones are in the pockets of teenagers and students around the country, and we wanted to create a way that allowed them to check in with their parents just by using the tools already included in the devices, like texting, email and GPS, said Michael Monahan, founder of Gabe The Guardian app. This eliminates the need for students to have to call mom or dad when they are at a location, they can simply show their parents where they are on a map.

By selecting emergency contacts and drafting a message before your teenager is out for the night, you will know they are one touch away from letting you know where they are and if they are okay. Staying in touch with your teenager has never been easier.

Mobile phones are a great way to keep in contact with your kids and they give parents peace of mind when their teens are out for the night, Monahan said. By creating this easy way to communicate with each other, that information is shared more easily and parents can rest easier at night.

Of course, using a smartphone app, like Gabe The Guardian, to alert your family of an emergency situation is no substitute for contacting 9-1-1. Your first call should be to emergency services and the smartphone app should be used as a secondary measure to alert your contacts of your situation.

Staying safe is sure to help not only make the night one to remember, but also help parents sleep better. So go out and have fun, but remember to take your smartphone safety app with you!
