Mesothelioma has claimed another victim. This time it is no other person than a prominent engineer in Washington State who helped pass a law requiring that land subdivisions be done by professional surveyors. Recently, he died after a seven year ordeal with the disease as was reported by the Daily Journal of Commerce.

The founder of Hugh G. Goldsmith and Associates engineering and land surveying firm in Bellevue, Washington, died at the age of 83.

Many Navy veterans of have become ill with mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure, because of the significant amount of asbestos used then on naval ships. Hugh Goldsmith was in the Navy from 1945 to 1948

Recently, members of Britain's largest trade unions have decried endeavors by government officials to exclude the unions from participating in the process of compensation due to workers who were exposed to the deadly materials.

Over 300 products containing asbestos were utilized by the Navy and other military sectors from the 1930s through the 1970s.

So because of the long latency period associated with mesothelioma, many veterans do not experience related symptoms until 20- 50 years after exposure, when the disease has already progressed to its later stages.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer which typically affects the lining of the lungs and is primarily caused by exposure to airborne asbestos fibres. It is highly aggressive and is resistant to many standard cancer treatments. Currently there is no known cure for mesothelioma, and the average survival time varies from 4 to 18 months after diagnosis.

Survival rate for mesothelioma victims is actually very low but greater awareness is being created and it is recommended to see a mesothelioma lawyer to help in securing financing for the disease.
