Promoting Good Health With Herbal Remedies
For thousands of years, people have been using natural herbal remedies
. Our ancestors found that certain plants helped people feel better and they passed the information down from one generation to the next. Certain leaves when boiled eased morning sickness and a poultice made with moss helped heal a wound faster. This information has been passed along because it had value. The plants did something that worked.
Everywhere around us we are seeing advertising for organic this, natural that, alternative medicine, acupuncture. All of these have been around for a long time, but they are getting more attention recently. People seem to be realizing that we have ventured too far from nature and it is taking a tremendous toll on our wellbeing.
A fair majority of prescriptions and over the counter medications are derived from plants and other natural products sometimes found right in our back yards. For instance, that beautiful, flowering foxglove in your garden is the plant the medication digitalis is derived from. A chemical from the tropical forest plant named Cephaelis ipecacuanha is what the Ipecac syrup is made of that most of us keep in our medicine cabinets.
All of us have been told that lavender is soothing to the senses and that chamomile tea will help calm you after a hectic day. Many of these claims have been scientifically proven, but many have not. The government doesn't regulate the herbal supplement business and there is no standardization within the industry. Although lacking "proof", millions of people continue to move toward natural products.
Purchasing an herbal supplement means that you are getting some part of the plant, not a chemically designed alternative. If you have a reasonably green thumb you can even grow some of your own at home. Rose hips, for instance, may be in your garden already. They are a great source of Vitamin C (don't use them if you've used insecticide though) which is a known antioxidant. If you have a hibiscus plant near to hand, you can boil the flowers with the rose hips and make yourself a flavorful tea.
It's hard not to have heard about the benefits of garlic. It's good for lowing bad cholesterol. Chamomile is another plant you can grow yourself and it has an attractive daisy-like bloom and makes a nice tea for the end of a busy day. To relax tight or cramping muscles try valerian root.
For centuries, the Chinese people have been spreading the benefits of Gingko Biloba for helping memory and increasing the flow of blood throughout the body. It has also shown useful in treating vertigo and tinnitus. As an antioxidant it fights the signs of aging also.
You will find herbal remedies for pretty much anything that ails you. Arthritis, ulcers, cough, upset stomach, diarrhea, muscle cramps, water retention, varicose veins, glaucoma, high blood pressure, colon cleansing, insomnia, headache, erectile dysfunction and hair loss -- just to name a few.
Before going out and loading up your shopping cart with herbal supplements, be sure to study up first. Determine your goals and set up a program that you will follow. This is a perfect way to get yourself on a total fitness regimen of healthier living. Start getting more exercise and eat healthier foods.
Some herbal supplements can take up to six months to show the benefits, so you have to stay consistent and patient. Many work quickly, too, such as chamomile or caffeine. Talk to your doctor before starting your new plan and never stop taking prescribed medications in order to substitute with herbal remedies. Herbs are not without side effects or drug interactions, so be safe first. Check the bottle labels and learn about bioavailability (how easily a product is used by the body) of certain products and how they are processed by talking with your pharmacist or an herbalist. Be informed and be well.
