Prop Joe - The Wire has a Proposition For You
Prop Joe - The Wire has a Proposition For You
Role: The most politically savvy of the drug kingpins, Joseph "Prop Joe" Stewart heads up all east-side drug operations for much of the The Wire and generally manages the supply (by way of the "Greeks") for all of Baltimore. He acquired his nickname from his trademark line "I've got a proposition for you," and he's regularly seen making discreet deals with Omar Little, police detectives, and a number of Baltimore's west-side drug runners.
For a drug lord, Joe is also remarkably non-violent, preferring peaceful resolutions to the majority of disagreements. Joe finds these solutions to be most rewarding financially and his sharp business sense always has at least 1 eye on the profits.
He is often seen playing with old radios, clocks, and a number of other gadgets.
Joe is quite a big man, but his portly figure almost lends to his likeability. He is liked by many folks in the drug game and is certainly the least polarizing and least hated of all the drug lords (i.e. Marlo Stanfield, Avon, Stringer Bell) in the show.
Played By: Robert F. ChewSeasons: In seasons 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 (actually, Joe is 1 of only 3 drug dealers to turn up in all 5 seasons of the series... the other 2 being Poot and Wee-Bey).My Favorite Scene: The Proposition Joe flashback bit that shows his days as a kid in school selling answers to an upcoming test. He appears to have had that business instinct from the day he left the womb.Best Quote: "Wanna know what kills more police than bullets and liquor? Boredom... You keep it boring, String. You keep it dead bleeping boring." With Avon locked up, Stringer sets up an agreement with Prop Joe such that he'll get heroine supply in exchange for property on the west side. This statement from Joe is a perfect example of his drive to minimize unnecessary violence in the hopes of increasing profits.Best Foil or Rival: Avon Barksdale. Barksdale craves power, Joe wants profits, and Stringer wants both. The Avon versus Proposition Joe rivalry is much more sophisticated than other rivalries / battles in the drug game, but it is there both in structure (Avon operates Baltimore's west side; Prop Joe the east side) and in style - (Barksdale lacks the business sense of a Proposition Joe and his initial instinct is typically violent... versus Joe who doesn't act on impulse but rather takes the most logical approach to optimize profits).Critical Analysis: (see above)
