Sizing a balloon should be a simple thing, right

? You just blow and blow until it's full, don't you? Not exactly.... in this article, I'll explain to you exactly how to get the right size for your balloon.

First of all, not all balloons are created equal. Some have the traditional balloon shape, and some have more of a round shape. For this article, we'll assume the balloons you are using have a traditional shape. The brand of balloons that I like best is either Qualatex or Betallic.

The general rule of thumb is that a balloon shaped like a tear drop is properly inflated. If the balloon looks like a light bulb, on the other hand, then it's too full and will probably pop. If it looks like a ball, it's not full enough, and may not float (if filled with helium).

Sometimes you may want to underinflate your balloons, like if you're building some air-filled decor and it's going to be outside on a hot day, you may want to make those balloons nice and round so that they are fairly squishy and have room to expand.

If you are filling the balloons with helium, you usually will want to fill them to the proper size so that they will float and last the right amount of time.

When would you want to over-inflate the balloons? Well, I guess if you were doing something where having fragile balloons would be an advantage- if you are using water balloons for example, or if you are playing a balloon popping game.
