Proper Duty Gear Is Crucial During Mob Control
More often than not, a mob is bereft of reason even if their ideas are founded on reason
. But the police handling them are legally bound to use reason when combating them. The mob may pelt stones, break glass, or even try lynching. But the police are not supposed to shoot or kill unless as a last resort. So, to control a rioting mob, it is important for the police to be able to defend themselves. As such, duty gear for self-defense is very important for police involved in riot control.
Conspicuous among this defensive duty gear is a riot shield. A riot shield is usually light and designed to protect the wearer from bricks, rocks, or shrapnel that the rioters are likely to throw. It may be rectangular in shape, or round, or may have what is known as a reverse curve. In weight they may vary anything from 5 lbs to 14 lbs based upon the size. There are large 24" x 48" riot shields behind which two people can seek protection during condition of extreme duress.
The riot shield used as duty gear during riot control is normally not designed to protect the users from bullets. In situations where bullets could be a possibility, a ballistic shield will have to be used. Other protective duty gear items that will help the mob controlling police are tactical goggles for eye protection, riot helmets, and also face shield. Riot helmets are of many types with some having chinstraps and others with projecting wire guard for the face.
The duty gear items used for suppressing the mob are mainly batons, water cannons, tear gas, plastic bullets, and pepper sprays. Batons are perhaps the most important unit of their duty gear when police set forth to control a mob. These innocuous looking rods with steel balls at the end have a lot of locked up power in them. Expandable telescopic batons can easily be flipped to function as a 16 baton, or 21 baton, or 26 baton, as necessary.
Pepper spray is a very handy duty gear for riot control, as it is for self-defense against all types of anti-social elements. It is a spraying mechanism that uses a chemical agent known as capsaicin, a vegetable extract that creates a burning sensation in tissues and causes a high level of irritation in sensitive organs like eyes. Other duty gear equipments of riot police are tear gas, tasers, and sometimes flash lights with special attachments that can disorient the crowd by emitting psychedelic colors.
Riot police try to avoid using lethal weapons as much as possible. Hence the use of only plastic bullets, water cannons etc. to disperse the crowd. Still, they may have to resort to shooting if situation turns very bad. So police would obviously be prepared with a loaded gun, which is their eternal duty gear.
