Proper Lawn Maintenance For The Autumn Months

Although it is easy to think that with leaves falling there is nothing left to do

with the lawn once autumn hits, the truth is that there is actually quite a few things that you need to during the autumn months if you want to keep your lawn in top shape. A great deal of autumn lawn maintenance has to do with getting the garden ready for the winter so that when spring rolls around you will have healthy grass again. The following are a just a few tips that will help ensure your lawn stays healthy once the cold sets in.

The first set of autumn tips pertain to the lawn directly, because you need to alter your mowing habits quite a bit to attend to the fact that the grass is not growing at the same rate it was during the spring and summer months. Some people are surprised to learn that the grass needs mowed at all, but in reality until the winter snow hits the grass should be regularly trimmed in order to keep it healthy much like you still need to get your hair trimmed even if you are growing it out to promote healthy growth of the ends.

When it comes to lawn maintenance however, you will not have to adjust your habits too much, as all that is required is you need to move the mower blade up so that you only trim 1/3 of the grass so that you can keep the ground sheltered and protected when the winter months set in. You should also reduce the amount of water that you treat the grass with because it is no longer necessary with the cooler months starting to set in. Most likely at this point you will only need to mow every few months instead of every month.

Before the winter actually comes you will also want to make sure that you fertilise the areas in your lawn that have already died or look visibly weaker due to issues such as poor soil or sunburn. By applying a dormant fertiliser that can rest on these areas over the winter you can rest assured that they will be getting the nitrogen they need during the winter months to help keep them healthy, and rejuvenate the areas before the sprig comes back around. You can also apply more grass seed in these areas during the autumn as well.

Finally, it is also important that when you start to take care of the autumn lawn maintenance tasks you also pay attention to the needs of your tools so that everything runs correctly when you get them back out during the summer months.

This includes draining and storing any garden hoses that you have out, draining the gas tanks of motorised tools once the colder weather sets in, and of course getting everything sharpened during the break in gardening months so that next year you are ready to go again as soon as possible.
