When we store away things, sometimes it is months later that we unpack them

. Wouldnt it be a treat if you could find them in their original condition when you open again? Storing away things properly and neatly keep your goods in better condition. Here are some tips you can follow to pack and store the right way.

Old and damp boxes and containers are breeding grounds for insects and mould. Make sure your cardboard boxes and other packaging are clean, dry and new.

You can put a layer of polythene or plastic sheets to protect the contents of your cardboard box from all contingencies.

Use transparent plastic bins to store knick-knacks and smaller items so you can identify them without having to open every box.

When you store books and documents, keep them flat and put them in boxes which can hold them comfortably and spacious enough to move them around when you have to look for something.

If you are storing away household appliances, make sure to clean, dry and wrap them up properly. Pack away all the gadgets, wire cords, plugs and extra accessories that come with these appliances together in one container. Stack the breakable ones on top. If the original packaging is still in good shape, use most of it to store them in.

When you pack clothing, bedding and towels, never pack them with metal items or other items that can stain them over time. Put them separately in crates or boxes. Cover the top with polythene to keep out any potential dust.

For dishes and glassware use padding and plenty of cushioning between the items to reduce friction. Wrap them up individually with newspapers or sheets of tissue. Label the carton as fragile items to avoid any accidents.

Disassemble furniture for convenience when storing. This way it will allow more room for other things.

Holiday decorations when stored away properly can be reused just as the first time. You can wrap strings of light bulbs around cardboard and cylindrical shaped items to ensure they wont get tangled up. Save the original packaging to pack the decorating items.

When you store metal items and tools, a bit of machine oil can protect them from rust. Make sure to clean them and pack in bundles and tie them.

Leave a clear walkway between the stored goods to access them easily.
