Pros And Cons Of Paraffin And Soy Pillar Candles
Pros And Cons Of Paraffin And Soy Pillar Candles
Since the nineteenth century and the industrial revolution, paraffin candles were really your only choice in pillar candles. Recently though, two other affordable choices have become quite popular. I would not consider beeswax candles to be one of these however, since beeswax is very expensive. Beeswax also usually comes in the form of taper candles and it's difficult to scent, since it has a scent of its own. The other two choices are soy pillar candles and palm wax pillar candles. The two are comparable in price, but soy is more popular and I will be comparing soy to paraffin today.
Soy pillar candles advantages and paraffin pillar candle disadvantages:
Firstly, some characteristics that apply to soy wax candles are that they burn cleaner, cooler and longer than paraffin candles. Soy wax has a better scent throw than paraffin and can hold up to twice as much fragrance.
More specifically to soy pillar candles, and probably most notably, they tend to hold their shape very well. When you burn a soy pillar candle correctly, the exterior will hold its shape right up until it burns away. Now just to be clear, soy pillar candles are actually not made from 100% soy wax. The higher quality soy wax pillar blends contain a vast majority of soy wax blended with botanical oils to help the wax hold its shape.
Even when you correctly burn a paraffin pillar candle, it will very often become disfigured and bulge out at the top of the candle near the flame and wax pool. Paraffin has higher oil content than soy wax and is therefore less rigid. It is usually necessary to fix tighten the bulge when the candle is still warm to prevent further bulging.
Another characteristic that is specific to soy pillar candles is that they produce environmentally friendly waste. You will always have a bit of leftover wax when the candle has burned all the way down. The soy wax used is biodegradable and will not pollute the earth. When you dispose of the remains of a paraffin candle, you are throwing something away that is not biodegradable.
Pros of paraffin pillar candles & cons of soy pillar candles:
The main advantages of paraffin pillar candles are aesthetic, so it's really a matter of opinion. Firstly, paraffin pillar candles tend to be more vibrant and colorful as opposed to soy which has a pastel-esque appearance. Also, there is currently no way to produce the mottling effect that has become so popular in paraffin candles over the past couple decades. Soy candles can produce a frosting effect, but this is generally not considered desirable. Mottled paraffin candles produce a "rustic" appearance.
Another aspect has to do with scent throw, though I would consider this a difference rather than a distinct advantage. Although soy is considered to have a more consistent scent throw that lasts longer, paraffin releases fragrance into the air more quickly. So if you want to fill a room with fragrance in 10 or 15 minutes, paraffin would be your choice.
