Pros And Cons Of Using An Electric Mower

Regardless of the advancements in technology and the popularity of houses with smaller yards

, not many homeowners are considering the purchase of an electric mower for their lawnmowing needs. The main reason for this occurrence is that most homeowners are only thinking about the negatives of such a decision and do not spare a thought for the positives. There are two sides to every story, and there are a number of pros and cons associated with buying an electric mower.

Pros

If you decide to choose an electric mower over a petrol powered one, you will actually receive a number of benefits, including:

Sound: An electric mower is much quieter than the engine used in a petrol powered model. This means that these mowers produce far less noise pollution, helping to keep your neighbours who like to sleep in till all hours happy.

Smell: Electric models do not produce any smoke or fumes that could be potentially harmful to the homeowner. This is especially beneficial for people with small children or pets who may be outside in the yard at the same time that it is being mowed.

Usability: An electric mower is much easier than a petrol powered model to turn and maneouvre, as the 24 volt battery is generally found above the rear axle (where its weight is supported). This can make cutting around borders or curves much faster.

Cons

As with anything, however, there are a number of disadvantages associated with the purchase of an electric model over a petrol powered one, including:

Power: An electric model has a very low cutting power when compared to a petrol powered mower; they will maintain their full cutting horse power for about 90% of its use. This power will then continuously decrease as the battery runs down.

Stall: Electric mowers that are not fitted with a grass catching attachment are known to stall much easier than other models, as cut grass can easily become lodged in the discharge chute. This will require you to stop mowing and clear the blockage before continuing.

Pollution: Whilst there is a long running belief that electric mowers are pollution free, this is not actually the case they produce small carbon emissions at the power station. These levels are, however, far less than those produced by other models.

As you can see, there are a number of advantages and disadvantages associated with an electric mower. To decide whether this type is the better choice for your homes and your needs, it is important that you weigh up these pros and cons, not forgetting to take into account how each will affect you. You may find that the advantages you will receive from using such a mower will far outweigh the disadvantages, or vice versa.
