Pros and Cons of Owning Chickens
A lot of people are starting to realize that owning chickens as pet is a completely reasonable idea and is extremely fun. I will run down a few pros and cons to owning chickens and hopefully you will see that it is a great idea and will get your own soon! So let me start off with the pros of becoming a chicken owner.
1. Extremely cheap pets to own. - Not only are chickens some of the cheapest pets you can find, but their maintenance is also very cheap, even if you have a lot of them! A lot of the reason they are so cheap to keep is that they are not picky about food at all. You can get bags of chicken feed for a very low cost and will definitely be cheaper than having a dog or cat. They will also eat leftovers and scraps from your meals.
2. They lay eggs and unfortunately can be eaten. - Chickens will lay you fresh eggs to eat all the time. What other pet is going to deliver you delicious food on a regular basis. If you don't eat eggs, you can sell them. I think this is the main selling point on buying chickens. Although I don't want to mention it, I know I must because it is another main reason people get chickens. They of course can be killed and eaten. I personally do not do this, but I know many chicken owners do, so yes, this is another pro for owning chickens.
3. Low maintenance. - Unlike dogs who need everyday grooming and cats who need your undivided attention, chickens need none of those. You don't have to bring them to your vet every once in a while to take shots and doses of vaccines. All you have to do is feed them and supply clean water every day. Their coops must be cleaned at least once a week or twice every month depending on the number of chickens that you own.
4. Fertilizer and pest control. - Two main things that all chicken owners love about their chickens is that they produce fertilizer for you and will kill pests in your yard. Letting your chickens roam your yard will instantly increase the health of it, chickens love to eat any bugs and pests that they find. Also, while they are roaming they will also be pooping, which is great because their poop is a natural fertilizer and will help your plants and crops grow. So just buy owning chickens and letting them walk around your yard, you will be fertilizing your plants and killing the bugs, insects and worms that might be harming your yard.
Cons- Chickens are messy and get sick together. Their poop smells terrible that it can reach certain areas in your house. If you're the type of person who doesn't want to go through hours of cleaning, chickens aren't really the pets for you. In terms of getting sick this is a con. Because when one catches flu, everyone gets it too. And if one dies because of that flu, it is expected that every single chicken living with that infected chicken who also got that flu is also going to die after a few days. So keep your chickens in a healthy and clean environment by cleaning their coop once or twice a week and you will not have any problems.
