Prosperity of drive shafts
According to the literal meaning of the drive shaft, we would infer that it is expected to give power to drive the attached objects like machines to work. It is a mechanical component for transmitting torque and rotation, usually used to connect other components for a drive train that cannot be connected directly because of distance or the need to allow for relative movement between them. It is subject to torsion and shear stress, equivalent to the difference between the input torque and the load. As a result, it should be strong enough to bear the stress.
The idea of drive shaft was firstly put forward at the 19th century. Many machines with patent reissue were driven by the various shafts such as the planning and matching machine in 1861. As time goes by, the terms are applied to modern use. It was expects to connect two parts and affect as a power transmission. For example, it refers to the shaft between the transmission on and driving trucks of his climax locomotive. And nowadays, it is certain that shafts are widely used in many fields.
As it is known to us, vehicles are playing important role in our daily life. Thus, some details about the shafts on the automobiles are given in the following. In terms of different vehicles, the types of shafts vary accordingly. Generally speaking, an automobile may use a longitudinal shaft to deliver power from an engine/transmission to the other end of the vehicle before it goes to the wheels. And a pair of short drive shafts is commonly used to send power from a central differential, transmission, or transaxle to the wheels. Let's just take the four-wheel drive vehicle for example. In this case, a drive shaft connecting the gearbox to a rear differential is also called a prop-shaft. Commonly, A prop-shaft assembly is made up of a propeller shaft, a slip joint and one or more universal joints. The propeller shaft serves to transmit the drive force generated by the engine to the axles. And the called half shaft would connect a rear differential to a rear wheel. In words, there are several different types of drive shafts used in the automotive industry: one-piece drive shaft, two-piece drive shaft and slip-in-tube drive shaft.
Besides, the terms are still employed in motorcycles, power-driven ships, locomotives and bicycles and so on. Above all, there is no doubt that the drive shaft, as amechanical component has kept improving our industry and daily life greatly. It would be favorable in much more fields in the future.
