, your car is usually your next largest and most carefully considered purchase. It goes without saying then that it deserves to be kept in a reasonably sheltered environment to keep it smart and ensure its longevity.

A car that's constantly exposed to the wet, winter conditions, scorching sun, general pollution and the occasional gift from a feathered friend is not going to keep its shine very long. And aside from being a depreciating asset, there's the fact that many people actually like to drive round in a nice looking car.

Shelter from the elements is precisely what a carport provides. There is also a huge selection of different styles and sizes and, in contrast to a traditional garage, they are reasonably easy on the wallet.

When it comes to selecting a particular carport, the first decision you need to make is whether you intend to install it yourself or engage a contractor to do it for you. Although some people design completely custom carports, mostly it is a matter of putting together a kit containing all the various elements.

Which way you elect to go will of course be determined by the type of kit you're interested in, your own competence with DIY and whether you want to spend the time anyway. Not all carport kits are alike when it comes to the skill level and effort required to put them together.

The second major choice to make is that of choosing the main materials. Metal carports are more common, cheaper and arguably easier to put together. However wooden carport kits provide a much more visually attractive result, but with a price tag that reflects this.

Wood carports are also on the whole more complicated to assemble than metal ones. Perhaps surprisingly, wood carport kits are more commonly installed in mainland Europe and the UK rather than the USA and Canada.

But if you're after not just sheltering you car, but also adding value to your property, then a high quality, attractive wood carport represents a sound investment. The only thing to weigh up is the extra expense and construction complexity.
