Protect Your Family By Poison-proofing Your Home
Parents have so much to worry about when it comes to their children's safety
, from the threat of terrorism to car accidents to the bully at school. Try as we may, we cannot control some of the harms that may come our family's way. However we are responsible to prevent those hazards which are definitely preventable: one of those is the incidence of poisons and toxins in our homes. Here are some things for you to look out for when it comes to poison-proofing your living environment.
--Poison from Products
When a child becomes ambulant, parents are suddenly acutely aware of exactly how much "bad stuff" he can get into and fast! Make sure you keep any potential toxins out of reach and behind lock and key whenever possible. Child-proof cabinet gizmos are great deterrents, but they are not fail-proof. It is best to just keep these poisons out of reach all over the house:
Kitchen: Oven cleaner, drain opener, alcoholic beverages, bleach cleaners
Bathroom: Medicines, cleaners, makeup, toiletries, mouthwash, hair colorants, nail polish and remover
Garage: Pesticides, gasoline, rust remover, kerosene, lighter fluid, antifreeze, motor oil, etc.
--Poisons from the ground
If you live in more humid climates, wild mushrooms growing in your hard can be a real concern. Everything goes into little mouths, especially if it looks like food, so be sure to scour your yard regularly for mushrooms and poisonous berries
Long term exposure to radon gas that can emanate from the ground underneath a house has been shown to be a carcinogen. Have your home tested for toxic levels of radon gas: it's inexpensive, easy, and fast.
Mold and mildew that has been left to flourish in basements, crawl spaces, and bathrooms can cause a host of health problems for children and adults alike. If you see or smell mold in your home, have it professionally removed at once.
-- Lead poisoning
Lead poisoning is still a threat to America's families, despite the government's attempts to eradicate the problem. Parents can be proactive, however, in preventing the chances of lead poisoning occurring:
- If you live in a home that is more than 30 years old, have the paint tested for lead content, and make changes if necessary.
- Have the top soil in your yard tested for lead content. High amounts of lead brought into the house may result in lead dust circulating through your HVAC system on a continuous basis.
- Only buy lead free toys for your family. The recent influx of Chinese-manufactured toys with a high lead content put parents on the alert for the last few years: remain vigilant. Insist on buying your toys from high quality vendors who test and audit for lead content frequently. You simply cannot be too careful when it comes to your children's toys.
You can't protect your family from every hazard, but you can reduce the likelihood of their being poisoned in your own home: it's worth the effort.
