Protecting People With Security Systems

In office buildings, a security system may be installed on the doors of one particular suite

, simply to prevent intrusion after business hours and on weekends. Exterior building doors may remain unlocked until late at night, or on weekends, to allow public access or to permit access by other employees and guests.

One example of such an installation would be a five-story building with a law firm on the first floor, college classrooms on three floors, and executive offices on the uppermost floor.

Students attend evening classes that conclude long after the regular business tenants have gone home. So the building doors must remain open until 11 p.m. weekdays and on Saturdays until 6 p.m.. The law firm has its own security system to deter break-ins to their suite and to maintain the confidentiality of the clients they serve.

The executive offices on the fifth floor share a spacious lobby and reception desk, but each of their four hallway doors have programmed access readers. All employees are assigned badges for their particular department entrance door. And the company maintains small badge readers installed in building elevators, preventing access to the top floor after 5 p.m. and on weekends. The elevator security protects the executives who often work late from surprise visits from students who may have lost their way to class, and from strangers who might interrupt staff productivity.

Back on the first floor, the law firm has the ability to "lock itself in" if one or two employees are working late or on a weekend. Because their system is programmable, the employees can set the panel to an occupied mode; the suite doors are locked against outsiders, and the employees are able to work without concern over a stranger wandering in unannounced.

The college has special security needs, requiring that the administrative offices be locked after normal business hours, but permitting classrooms, meeting rooms, and breakrooms to be accessible until the last class concludes. Their security system is programmed into "zones" that keep student records and computers safe in the administrative area for a set number of hours per week, and other zones that are activated by the cleaning crew once the classrooms are readied for the next day.

Commercial security systems offer many features to protect people as well as property. Emergency codes can be programmed into panels and be activated if employees are threatened with violence. Areas containing laboratories, valuables, or archived records can be alarmed 24/7 and access only granted to specific employees.

It is important to discuss security needs with an experienced consultant so that people, as well as property, can be protected with the proper equipment.
