Protecting Your Company With Health And Safety Training

Health and safety - It can be the bane of our lives

. I'm sure we have all been accosted for health and safety training around the workplace, it is usually one of the first things that you do when you start with a new company and with good reason. Once you have received your training a large proportion of the responsibility around the workplace falls upon the individual. Obviously the company has to take responsibility when it comes to new equipment and furniture, but at the end of the day if equipment is used incorrectly or placed in an incorrect location it then becomes the companies and the individuals at blame.

As an office manager, the responsibility of ensuring that all new employees have performed the appropriate levels of health and safety training falls within your remit, and if I'm honest you are probably not going to make too many friends around the office by enforcing the rules. I'm sure you may have already experienced the groans of despair as soon as you mention the words training to members of staff around the office. However, don't let this get you down.

When it comes to safety around the workplace, who cares about the amount of friends you make? Secondly, if your office is anything like mine, there are a number of individuals who constantly flaunt the H&S regulations. If you catch anyone around the office carrying items that might be excessive in weight, carrying items which are unstable or lifting items without bending their knees, then it would be advisable to recommend that the individuals re-train as clearly they haven't mastered the basics. I usually find that it only takes one warning and people normally remember how to lift items correctly and safely and you don't have to do it in a nasty way, maybe mention it jokingly with a smile.

It is however important to remember that if an employee suffers an injury whilst at work it is the company that will be to blame ultimately. If an investigation is initiated then it may be a case that the individual is found guilty of flaunting the office's H&S policy, but you need to be aware that any incident around the office could potentially be a financial ticking time bomb. Ensure that you don't have any awkward potential banana skins in 2010 by ensuring that your company completes thorough health and safety training policies.
