Protecting Your Home From Intruders

Home security means a lot more than simply keeping your stuff safe

. It means having peace of mind and not having to worry about potential threats to your home or property. Most people take the common route to precaution: lock the doors at night, lock the downstairs windows, don't leave newspapers outside when away, and don't put valuables in plain sight of windows. Unfortunately this degree of precaution fails to function as a deterrent to theft and does nothing for a homeowner when a burglar decides to try his luck.

Basic precautions are good general habits, but the fact of the matter is if a thief wants into a home, a locked window isn't going to give them much pause. It is far better to have layered security, some with the intention of deterring the burglar and others to assist with catching the burglar later if that deterrence does not work. This combination can turn an otherwise vulnerable home into a veritable fortress.

The first layer of defence should be external. Burglars often scope out a location long before entering and the obvious silhouette of a security camera is often enough to make them chose a different location for their criminal activities. No burglar wants their face caught on film, or their license plate nicely framed for the police to later investigate.

Though a sign or indication of CCTV cameras is one of the most effective deterrents against burglary, it is by no means an absolute assurance that criminals wont still make the attempt. Even the best camera setups can have blind spots, and some savvy burglar may find his way into the home without being caught on film. This is where alarm systems, a second layer of defence, come into play. Upon entering the home and triggering the alarm, the burglar is immediately warned that the police are inbound and that the entire neighbourhood is aware of the intrusion.

Installation of a security system can be as simple as calling a local company and having them set up a network. It is generally better to allow security professionals to carry out the installation, as this minimizes the number of vulnerabilities that installations by the inexperienced may contain. Retail alarms and security cameras are generally inexpensive and because they can aid in the recovery of stolen valuables in addition to providing a sense of comfort and security, they are generally a purchase that is rarely regretted by home and business owners alike.

There is no such thing as an impenetrable defence, but this in no way implies that no precautions should be taken against a possible intruder. By layering a defence in and around the home and making this defence apparent even to casual observers, the chances of a successful burglary are substantially reduced while the probability of recovering goods and identifying suspects is dramatically increased. Even a single security camera can make the difference between a future burglary and a secure home.
