Protecting Your Privacy on Facebook
I decided to make sure that what I posted on Facebook stayed private
, and minimize ads I'd get shown. Don't get me wrong, I love Facebook but just didn't want to sacrifice my privacy in order to use it.
I used a free tool called CloakGuard which let me encrypt my posting (or part of it) that I wanted to keep private. I picked a keyword, selected what I wanted to keep private and encrypted it before posting to Facebook. I could still post to Facebook as I did before, but now I know that Facebook cannot read what I've posted. I shared my keyword with friends who I wanted to share that posting with and they can use CloakGuard for free too.
Here are the steps in more detail that I followed :
1. Get the free FireFox Add on at the
CloakGuard Download Link
2. Follow the instructions to download it. Once you have completed that, I noticed a new "CLOAKGUARD" option in the "TOOLS" selection of FireFox.
3. Picked "SETUP" from it and then enter your default Keyword in it. This is the Keyword that you'll use to encrypt information.
4. I started to enter a Facebook posting but before posting it, I selected the text that I wanted to keep private.
5. I went to the TOOLS menu within FireFox and selected CLOAK. This changed the text that I had highlighted into a bunch of garbled characters.
6. I went ahead and completed my Facebook posting.
7. Just to check, I tried to read that posting and saw that the part of the posting that I had encrypted, now showed up as garbled (encrypted) text. Like : [[![asfdhlhj67732hdlk]!]]
8. In order to read it, I highlight that encrypted text, Went to the "TOOLS" selection of Firefox and pick "deCLOAK".
9. This converted it back to normal and showed the original message that I had posted.
10. I shared the keyword I had used with my friends who I wanted to be able to read my encrypted posting, and they were able to use CloakGuard to read it too.
11. I found this little,
2 minute tutorial helpful too.
Another approach, which I liked and does the same thing but without any software download is to use the free online CLOAKGUARD application at
CloakGuard Online.
