Psoriasis Dealing With It The Natural Way

Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease with no known cure

. It can be hereditary and is believed to be caused by an over-active immune system. The immune system mistakenly believes the skin cells are damaged, triggering an accelerated repair process and reproducing skin cells at a rapid rate, causing patches of thick, red skin. The additional skin cells rise to the surface, dry and flake off. Psoriasis most commonly affects the scalp, but can also affect elbows, knees, palms, feet and the face, causing an unbearable itch.

The medical profession often prescribes steroids or cortisone treatments, however, psoriasis can become resistant to these and often flares up when treatment is stopped.

Natural remedies are wide and varied, and where one may ease and even cure the symptoms for one person, the same may not work for another. However, treating the complaint naturally has many advantages.

Many natural remedy practitioners agree the most effective way to balance the immune system is through diet. Dietary recommendations include reducing grains, yeast and sugar intake, and increasing healthy fats, otherwise known as EFA's or essential fatty acids, such as flaxseed oil or fish oils.

Cut out dairy products, tea and coffee for at least a month and once there is an improvement you can gradually, one by one, introduce back into the diet, monitoring carefully for changes. Increase your daily intake of nuts and seeds, fresh fruit and vegetables, buying organic if possible. You may also wish to try goats' milk or soya milk.

Regular detoxing can also be of benefit. Try a juice detox for a few days, including juices from carrots, cucumbers and beetroots.

Natural skin applications include applying avocado oil or cashew nut oil to the affected areas. Vitamin E has been known to reduce the itching and can also be taken orally.

Supplements can include Echinacea or Bee Pollen, both of which can be taken in tablet form and are believed to help modulate the immune system.

The aloe vera plant, particularly the aloe barbadensis variety, can help in balancing the immune system and soothing the skin. The juice contains an abundance of vitamins and minerals to work from the inside out and in gelly form is quickly absorbed to relieve itching and inflammation.

With no known cure, there can be no guarantee, but in many cases a combination or one or more of these remedies can ease the condition and allow a better quality of life.
