Psychosocial Issues To Cope Up At Secondary Schools

I still remember my first day at secondary school

. Though the flagship of school was same as my middle school and been migrated with a bunch of my classmates here, I was pretty under confident and anxious about the new environment. My other mates were in better shape than me as they were having elder brothers and sisters studying in senior secondary. For once I thought why my mother never thought of such situation and got me an elder bro or sis who could have been a moral support. But it was useless as for the moment there were none. New class, new mates, new seniors and that typical feeling of getting into teen age were such terrible thing to imagine. I dont remember now how I surpassed it. May be I was lucky to be adjustable and not bullied like my other mates or may be being honors student my teachers gave me help right from the beginning. I think part in part both the things must have worked.

Now when I see such students during my visiting lectures for motivation workshop in number of Geelong secondary schools I sometimes come across this feeling I used to have. And I try to think of the various issues students face and the possible solutions they could go for.

Some main issues to enumerate are:

Bullying: In our times where this term was just restricted to verbal or physical bullying, this generation has to face yet another type known as cyber bullying. Race, social status, religion, sexual preference, shyness are some main factors with which students are picked. This is one major problem because it not only causes psychosocial damages to persons identity but sometimes it grows to cause tragic incidents as suicides.

Peer pressure: The major reason to make children do things they dont want to do. This pressure sometimes gives them wrong track as early age drinking and having sex. The mentality here is to become like others, to get popular.

Truancy: Unexcused absence gives place to chronic absenteeism. This automatically brings the lower academic scores. Family atmosphere is a major reason for such problem.

Partying: This is the teenage rebel to get socially, mentally and physically free. Children feel livelier and in due course of this they dont understand the difference between good and bad.

Substance abuse: Next phase to peer pressure can cause this which seriously hinders their academic performance.

Stress: Factors as school overload, family problems, teenage turmoil all end up into a stressful situation and to resolve these children start opting new things way ahead their age.

These are some very common issues to be dealt with irrespective of which school it is. Whether private schools of Victoria or any other part of the world more or less everywhere these problems persists. It therefore becomes a moral duty of schools to arrange workshops that help them to deal such matters in a positive manner.
