Underwear is a funny little thing. Its main purpose is to keep our private areas just that, private. However as fashion styles change and people attribute personalities to whatever clothing you choose to wear underwear has become one of the most important facets of the fashion industry so much so that lingerie shops are coming as prominent as food stores in shopping arcades and high streets. One of the reasons I think there has been such an increase in these shops is that of the complexity of women's underwear (I'm a man by the way). Even women have written about how sometimes its difficult to find the right size or clasp or cup, and these shops seem to hold experts a plenty on the said topics.

The main reason behind this movement is cultural, I think. As no matter how established we think this idea of gender equality is, the truth is, that it's very new to a lot of us and so people are breaking boundaries wherever they can, including in the underwear world

Another reason I can think of for this boobie related boom, is that there are so many different types of underwear for women to choose from, each, apparently, with their own specific purpose, as opposed to the all round, bit covering bras and knickers of generations past. You have knickers for partying, knickers for those times when you can't be bothered and sit slumped in front of a television shovelling Malteasers down your throat. You even have them for Laundry day', so really it's no big surprise that shops have come to the forefront providing choices for every woman out there. For the need for comfort there's the Sloggi line, which are made from cotton for extra comfort, and are also good value for money. There's the Miraclesuit if you want to give yourself a fuller figure or to take a few inches off of your figure, while also remaining comfortable, and covering both your breasts and your middle. And for the aforementioned confused women, there's something called Playtex which offers styling and non-wire support and understands that each woman's figure can be unique, thus trying to cater to them. With this increase in retailers, I think it's safe to say that this industry is far from going bust.
