If you want a smaller family run hotel, head downtown and you will find numerous options. Some of the hotels are quaint, some funky, a few are old and musty but each with its own individual character.
Up the coast in Sayulita there is a great campground right on the beach in front of the best surfing beach if you would rather just pitch a tent and be closer to nature.
Cafes, Restaurants, and Taco Stands
Where you are going to eat your next meal can be difficult to decide. Restaurant choices are numerous. Choose from taco stands, mom-and-pop cafes or gourmet restaurants that rival any in the world. You will find Mexican food, American food, and many international choices.
It's guaranteed that you will find something you like to eat. Mauricio's is popular for huge plates of fresh shrimp at very good prices. Cafe des Artistes is the world famous high end gourmet restaurant with spectacular food presentation and with prices to match. Try one of the busy tacos stands and you are guaranteed a great meal at giveaway prices.
Shopping
Strolling streets vendors offer all types a of jewelry and shawls and decorative trinkets. T-shirts shops abound if you are looking for a souvenir of your trip. The upscale boutiques carry a great selection of fine jewelry and clothing.
Many of the best shops are on or near the Malecon or Boardwalk which is in the center of town. Nuevo Vallarta has a nice air-conditioned mall with some great stores.
Sport Fishing
Puerto Vallarta has some of the best big game sport fishing in the world. It is not as welll known a destination as Cabo San Lucas but the fishing is arguably better.
You may be lucky and catch a record tuna or sailfish. Every November fishermen converge from all over the world to participate in one richest sportfishing tournaments anywhere.
Fishing charter companies operate out of Marina Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta. Fishing boats range from super pangas to luxury spotfishers. There is an option for every budget. All the crews speak some english so you will have no trouble communicating. And each captain has a secret spot to catch the biggest fish.
Great Weather
Most of the year the weather is nearly perfect. Much of the time it is sunny with temperatures in the mid 80's. August and September get hot and sticky - mid 90's and high humidity. As long as you are near the pool with a cold drink in your hand you are fine.
During the summer you will get tropical rains in the afternoon and evening. Usually, it won't rain for more than an hour or two. The mountains take on a stunning emerald green color this time of the year.
During the winter, which doesn't really feel like winter, the temperature may drop down into the 60's at night but will warm up by early morning. You rarely get any rain during the winter months.
