This notion of mobility is no longer an option, but it is becoming a standard amongst people. With this new notion, come certain challenges. Medical device industry is one of those industries which can not always comply with the demands of its clients. The reasons for this vary, but are also obvious too. One such technology that broke away from its norm was pulse oximetry. A pulse oximeter, also known as a pulse ox by some medical professionals, is a medical device used to measure the blood oxygen saturation level and pulse rate of individuals. A traditional pulse oximeter is a bulky table top device used mostly in hospitals. With modern advances, a new finger pulse oximeter is smaller than most cell phones. Its software is also very advanced where the accuracy has not suffered as its size has decreased.

Individuals with respiratory issues could now easily be on the go, while maintaining their oxygen levels. A simple clip of the pulse oximeter to ones fingertip provided readings within seconds. This information is then easily used to determine if any oxygen or medication is needed based on the individuals conditions. Information now could easily be communicated between the patient and the doctor now, since a pulse oximeter was easily available for home use.

A pulse oximeter is now a medical device that is portable, which gives certain individuals the opportunity to step out of their normal comfort zones of the past.
