Americans are increasingly experiences more and more health related problems. Unfortunately, most of these problems are related to cardiac issues due to lack of exercise and poor diets. The United States is one of the unhealthiest countries in the world, and this statistics is not changing anytime soon. One cardiac related issue is high cholesterol. There are three types of cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and VLDL. Of these three types, it is the LDL type that is considered to be the "bad" cholesterol.

There are many different types of monitoring medical devices out there for various vital signs, but unfortunately there is not one that is specifically designed to detect cholesterol levels. Instead, we have to focus our attention on other vital signs of the body to give us clues for cholesterol. The only way to detect the exact levels of your cholesterol is from a blood test, but now a pulse oximeter could be of great use. A pulse oximeter is a medical device used to measure the oxygen saturation level and pulse rate of an individual.

How could a pulse oximeter, also known as a pulse ox by some medical professionals, be used to help monitor a person's cholesterol? A pulse oximeter will not directly give readings of a person's cholesterol, but it will give you real time readings of your pulse rate which could be used to determine good or poor health. Pulse rate values are in direct correlation to various heart related conditions. Just be detecting an irregular heart beat or a high pulse rate, could mean the difference between life and death for certain individuals.

A pulse oximeter has been around in many medical clinics and hospitals for many years now, but never before available for home use. That is until now. Recent technology has paved way for new pulse oximetry technology to shrink in size, while maintaining high levels of accuracy.
