Gyms and athletic trainers all over the United States are building their toolbox with new devices to help monitor and train athletes

Pulse oximeters are not a new ground breaking technology that is currently being showcased at extravagant conventions throughout the country, but rather an old device put into a form that can be using by all. Prior to fingertip oximeters, most people only had access to oximeters at their doctor's offices or at the hospital. Now the bulky machine has been transformed into a small portable device that you can carry in your pocket that can be used to take spot measurements of your pulse and oxygen saturation levels.

These new fingertip pulse oximeters started out being used mostly for people with respiratory illnesses such as asthma or COPD, but recently your local gym trainers have realized their potential. A recent visit to the local gym, I found all the trainers had a small carrying case attached to their belts. I stared in mystery at first since this case was too small for a cell phone, but then I saw them pull out a pulse oximeter and clip it onto a fingertip of a client. They have figured out a way to take a client's pulse at instant speeds while at a very high accuracy. The impressive part of the entire situation is that the cost for these oximeters is under $100, which makes them very accessible to all or at least most athletes and trainers.

When looking for a pulse oximeter, do not just look at price, because that is not the best indicator for the best product. When determining which oximeter to buy, make sure to look at various brands and reviews. New finger oximeters are a great new technology that has been adopted from an old technology.
