Well, the short answer is this, according to Irish myth a man named Stingy Jack tricked the Devil and as a result was forced to walk the dark night with just a lit coal in a carved turnip as a lantern for all eternity.

The turnip has been replaced by pumpkins because when lots of Irish folk immigrated to the USA they brought this fantastic tradition with them and found that pumpkins made the perfect Jack o Lantern. The reason that they are carved into scary faces is to keep the evil spirits (and Stingy Jack) away.

So, whilst the story behind the tradition has stayed the same, pumpkins are pretty much now used everywhere. People have also taken to carving what can only be described as amazing works of art for sure. Whether frightening or comical, the symbolism is the same and I think that is fantastic.

Halloween is such a great time for bringing family, friends and community together. To be able to really embrace the festivities and totally immerse yourself in the celebrations, what better way than to wear a costume that is really very symbolic of All Hallows Eve?

The most amazing thing is the choice of costume available; you really do not have to be a fat, round orange vegetable. I have seen some really sexy pumpkin costumes, honest. Also, there are very, very cute infant and toddler ones too, which would make any little one look just adorable.
