Punjab: Bathinda Refinery To Be Equipped With World Class Scanners For Upgrading Security

The Guru Gobind Singh refinery in Bathinda which was inaugurated by Prime Minister

Manmohan Singh last month would be equipped with world-class scanners. The people visiting the refinery will have to undergo thorough investigation and scanning. Even the articles carried by visitors would be put under proper scan.

This development comes in the wake of threat perception to the refinery. Some days back, a militant group had threatened to blow up the refinery. The scanners have been installed at key entry points. The scanners would also be fitted underground which would help in keeping check on the vehicles entering the premises of the refinery. After only thorough scanning, persons would be allowed to enter the complex of refinery. The installation of scanners would ensure the persons entering the premises of refinery would not be able to breach the security apparatus. For this, eye scanning system was being installed in the refinery. The retina of all the employees would be scanned and preserved.

In order to upgrade the security at the refinery, scanning system is being installed. Meanwhile to strengthen the external security at the refinery, police has sought the requisition of Quick Response Force, said SSP Bhatinda, Dr. Sukhchain Singh Gill.As of now, BSF personnel had been currently in charge of the internal security of the refinery. But police has asked the state government to provide one company of quick response team for taking control of internal security of the refinery.

The Guru Gobind Singh Refinery (GGSR) project in Bhatinda, in the Punjab region of India, has been set-up to augment India's refined hydrocarbon product capacity. In view o f the fact that crude oil prices continue to spiral, India needs to push up its production of refined fuel products for the domestic market and as well as exporting in other Asian countries. The refinery will produce polypropylene, pet coke, sulphur, aviation turbine fuel, hexane, naphtha, mineral turpentine oil, motor spirit, kerosene oil, liquefied petroleum gas and high speed diesel. Products from the refinery will be moved out in three ways - via pipeline (from Bhatinda to Udhampur), road and rail.

For supplying crude to the refinery, HPCL has built a 1,017km pipeline from Mundra, Kachchh district, Gujarat, to Bhatinda, running through the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana with about 310 acres of land was acquired for the crude oil terminal at Mundra.
