Punta Cana And The Dominican Republic
There are very few islands in the world that are host to two countries
. The island of La Hispaniola in the Caribbean is probably the most famous. It is home to the historically rich nations of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. What is now the Dominican Republic was the first place where European explorers arrived in the New World. The Dominican Republic is also home to the longest surviving European settlement in all of the Americans, Santo Domingo, which was establish in 1496.
La Altagracia Province is located in the eastern most part of the Dominican Republic. At the end of the province resides a newly created zone known as, Punta Cana-Bavaro. The Beaches of this area are its most famous feature and face both the Atlantic and Caribbean oceans. Punta Cana became a very popular tourist destination in the 1970s, and its popularity has continued to grow - as has its infrastructure. Perhaps, not surprisingly, the majority of the over fifty tourist resorts are Spanish owned. Tourist accommodations frequently pay tribute to the originality of the natives of the area, with their manner of design and architecture.
Punta Cana and surrounding areas have a great many historic sites that are well worth visiting. Both the Cap Cana resort and the fishing village of Cabo San Rafael lie to the south of Punta Cana. Also to the south, near a 100 meter (300 ft) cliff, resides the fishing village known as, Boca de Yuma. It is believe that Boca de Yuma has existed there since the 16th century. The original fortress of Ponce de Leon can also be found in this area. Although the fortress is in one of the most inaccessible areas of the province, those who seek adventure can find it in the town of San Rafael del Yuma.
The real treasure of La Altagracia province is its coastline that stretches over 100 kilometers (62 miles). Apparently, the worst weather that the province of La Altagracia ever gets is a mild wind, and the beaches are, as mentioned, top-notch. For those who enjoy swimming, the waters in the area are mainly shallow. There are also many marine pools that are quite safe to soak in. Some of the most popular beaches are as follows: Punta Cana, Bvaro, El Cortecito, Macao, Arena Gorda, Uvero Alto,Cabeza de Toro, Cabo Engao, and Juanillo.
For those who like to do some shopping while traveling, Bavaro is the area to explore in Punta Cana. This shopping district stretches from the Macao beach to the Cabaze de Toro. As more resorts were built in the area, Bavaro also became the main location for the following amenities: schools, supermarkets, fine restaurants, clinics, banks, fast-food stores, drug stores and shopping malls.
Veron, which is named after the French owner of lumber business that once existed in the 1930s, is the largest town in Punta Cana. The town of Veron, while not a tourist destination in itself, serves as the main place of residence for those who work in the nearby resort areas. Those wishing to drive in this region of the Dominican Republic should make sure to familiarize themselves with gas stations in the area. Presently there are only four gas stations in Punta Cana. Higuey has the next nearest station, but it is located 48 kilometers (30 miles) away.
Flights into Punta Cana are available via the Punta Cana Airport. This airport is one of the most convenient and best serviced in the entire Caribbean. Even Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic, which also has an airport called Las Americas, does not handle as much traffic as Punta Cana Airport. The first privately owned airport in the world, just happens to be the Punta Cana Airport, a facility that opened in 1984. There is now a pre-clearance area as well, for American travelers who need to go through US customs.
