Puppy Training Techniques Every Dog Owner Should Use

Puppy training techniques are valuable resources in raising a puppy. Teaching a puppy the skills necessary for socialization and obedience can help relieve the frustrations that come with having an untrained puppy. Not all puppies are equally receptive to training, however, and finding the methods that best fit the puppy's needs will ensure the most successful outcome.

Training a puppy requires time and dedication from the owner or trainer. Some puppies may be naturally inclined towards aggressive or anti-social behavior. In such cases, patience is key, and the owner must continue to reinforce the training even if the puppy makes repeated mistakes. An important point to consider in dog training is the animal's age. While behavioral issues in fully grown dogs can be corrected with the right techniques, it is generally much easier to train a new puppy or a younger dog. If possible begin training the puppy at 6-8 weeks. The puppy's age often determines which training methods are the most suitable.

The first step in training is to acquaint the dog with its new home and surroundings. House training involves such puppy training techniques as crate training, potty training and recognition of simple commands. The ability of the puppy to recognize such commands as "sit," "come," and "stay" are especially important. These instructions serve as a basis for future training and ensure the safety of the puppy in a public setting.

Socialization is another important component of puppy training. If properly socialized, the dog will be able to interact with other humans and animals without reverting to frightened or aggressive behavior. Otherwise, it may be necessary to sequester the dog to its home at all times to prevent harm to itself and to others. The first three months of a dog's life is critical for teaching socialization skills; after the first 12 weeks, it is important to reinforce and refine these skills.

Leash training and obedience training are essential in teaching a puppy to be well behaved. Training a puppy to walk on a leash is twofold: the puppy must first be fitted with a collar, and then it becomes acquainted with a leash. The collar should be a snug fit but without being restrictively so. Leash training allows the owner to walk the puppy safely in an outdoors setting. Obedience training teaches the puppy to respond to a command and prevents the puppy from engaging in destructive behavior.

A few simple tips can improve the success rate of most puppy training techniques. Training a puppy requires positive reinforcement. Reward the puppy with praise or occasional treats when it successfully follows a command. Positive reinforcement will help the puppy to better absorb the training. Starting out training in a location that is free from distractions will ease the process for both the dog and its owner.
