Stores would always try to keep a collection of most of the popular gaming titles out there. It is however very difficult for them to always be able to have all the games you might want in stock. It makes it exceptionally difficult to always find the games you are looking for. It is just not logistically possible for regular stores to hold stock of all the games out there.
Regular stores have physical limitations that keep them from storing all of the stock needed and the overhead costs just wouldn't make it viable. Things have however changed drastically as the internet has evolved in recent years. For those businesses working online only, the overhead costs make it possible to pass on many of the savings to their customers. They also don't need to keep the same huge amounts of games in stock as regular games. They just act as the middleman for the transactions and make sure that the games get sent from the respective sources to those who purchase them.
Generally, online game store and websites offers those games at cheaper rates when compared to that are sold in the retail store. For example what you would have bought for 50 dollars from your local retail gaming store would probably cost less and sometimes considerable less from the online games store or website. Also, with the huge availability of games online, you could quite easily find an obsolete game which you were hunting for or interested, or even simply research into latest versions of games.
It would just not be possible if you go and buy games at a local store. There are just so many websites out there selling games both for download and in the normal packaging. Having so many options at your fingertips just makes getting your hands on the newest and best titles so much easier.
