If you allow crumbs to build up on your kitchen floor or avoid cleaning under cookers and fridges, you're serving up a pretty tasty meal for a rodent. Similarly, if your rubbish is not secured for example, you leave it in bags beside your home that are regularly torn open by cats or foxes you're risking becoming the best restaurant in town for the local rat population. At times when collections are less regular for example, at Christmas keeping your waste hidden is especially important.

Of course, no sane household is going to leave an inviting bowl of water out for a rat. However, if you do the same for other animals, such as your cat or birds, it will perform the same function. Leaking pipes are a popular water source for rats, so make sure these are fixed as soon as you notice a problem. This is just as important in the home as outside regularly check your waste pipes and drains for any signs of leakage.

Rats' essentials shelter

This is perhaps the most important point of all. A resourceful rat will easily be able to sniff out food and water in the most barren of places but a place which provides regular shelter will prove most attractive of all. Remember that this refers as much to the outside of your home as inside. For this reason, make sure you cover holes or gaps in walls and around pipes, investing in wire mesh to cover ventilation holes. In the garden, piles or leaves and compost heaps can pretty comfy for rats so clear away fallen foliage regularly and keep your heap as neat and tidy as possible.

Rodents on the rampage

Rats need to gnaw constantly to keep their teeth sharp and they'll happily munch through electrical cables or even interior walls, causing a fire risk and even structural damage. Getting a home emergency insurance policy in place may defend you against these types of catastrophes, but do you really want to be picking up the pieces when prevention is far better than cure?
