Purposeful Listening In A Music Class Makes Your Child An Active Listener

Listening with a Purpose allows a child to "move beyond the level of minimum awareness

(receiving) and become an active participant in the music and movement activities.

Language abilities in three and four year olds are blooming. "Playing" with language by making up new, funny words and sounds benefits children by increasing their skill in using speech creatively. Ultimately, this practice in imaginative speech strengthens the children's linguistic intelligence.

Through creative exploration and music-making with age-appropriate musical instruments, children:

*Discover what tones can be produced

*Discover what musical textures or timbres can be developed

*Experiment with different ways of playing instruments

Music functions in children's lives as a means of linking them to their cultural heritage and reflecting the values of their ethnic culture.

By initiating a movement response to a musical cue, children learn to:

*Coordinate auditory and motor skills at specific moments

*Control movement through focused listening over time

*Demonstrate recognition of the different aspects of music

*Be involved at different levels

We like to do a lot of listening together in music and movement classes. Sometimes we listen to silly pieces such as Traffic Jammers. Other times we listen to sounds or to recordings of people singing. And last week you'll remember that we listened to three different instruments and compared their timbres or distinct sound qualities. Using these skills, children can then begin to code, sort and categorize sounds according to their timbres. They're also learning important attention skills that will help them in school.
