The Pushkar Fair: It is the annual five-ten days camel and livestock fair, held in Pushkar town in Rajasthan, India. It is one of the world's largest camel fairs that involves buying and selling of livestocks at one place. At present it has become an important tourist attraction in India. The highlights of this fair consist some interesting competitions and events such as the "matka phod", "longest moustache", "bridal competition" and exhibition cricket match between the local Pushkar club and the team of random foreign tourists etc that attract international and domestic tourists alike.

The festival

A sizable number of locals, Indian and foreign tourists congregate on the banks of Pushkar Lake where the fair takes place. People buy and sell their livestock, which includes camels, cows, sheep and goats. The women folks can be seen roaming around the fair venue with traditional colorful wears enjoying the ambience with their family, friends and relatives. A camel race starts off the festival with music, songs and exhibitions to follow for next ten days.

When Pushkar Fair is celebrated?

It is celebrated for five days from the Kartik Poornima (the full moon day) of Kartik (November-December) as per Hindu calendar. The full moon day is an auspicious day according to the legend, when the Hindu God Brahma sprung up the Pushkar Lake, where Hindu devotees take bath in its sacred waters.

Pushkar City

The Pushkar city is located in the western part of Rajasthan located 11 kms away from Ajmer. This holy city is known for its exclusive temple of lord Brahma and world famous Pushkar Fair. This small town attracts large number of foreign tourists during Pushkar fair. The water of the Pushkar Lake is considered sacred and the ritual of taking dips in this lake is believed to bestow salvation. The holy dip at Pushkar Lake is most auspicious on full moon day. On this day many people descend the ghats, aided by the priests to take the holy dip on this occasion. Religious people give offerings of coconut, flowers, and cash to the lake and the priests.

How to Reach Pushkar?

By Road: Pushkar is located at a distance of 11 km from Ajmer. Pushkar has two bus stands. You may get buses to important cities such as Delhi, Jodhpur and Bikaner from Marwar bus stand and buses to Ajmer and Jaipur cities can be boarded from Ajmer bus stand.

By Air: The nearest airport from Pushkar is located in Jaipur, that is 131 kms away.

By Rail: Ajmer, which is situated at a distance of 11 km from Pushkar, is the nearest railway station. This city is well connected with major destinations in Rajasthan.
