Pushkar Camel Fair - 2012

Pushkar situated in Rajasthan, is a holy city that has several claims to fame

. It is oriented around the Pushkar Lake where ghats rise up out of the lakes edge up to temples. The small and beautiful town of Pushkar is set in a valley just about 14 km off Ajmer in the north Indian state of Rajasthan, surrounded by hills on three sides and sand dunes. Pushkar forms a fascinating location and an appropriate background for the annual religious and cattle fair which is globally famous and attracts thousands of visitors from all parts of the world. There are over 400 temples in Pushkar but the most famous is the Brahman temple that is unique in all of India. The medieval town is a maze of small streets and alleys packed with bazaars, hotels and cafes. The entire town rests in a valley with temple-studded mountains.

The town is famous for its Pushkar Camel Fair It is also known as Pushkar Ka Mela, is the annual week-long event of camel and livestock fair. Men buy and sell their livestock, which includes camels, cows, sheep and goats. Pushkar Ka Mela is considered as one of the worlds largest camel fairs, it is become an important tourist attraction. This event mixes the trading of an estimated 60,000 camels from the numerous Rajasthani villages across the state and a religious pilgrimage where two million people come to the lake to bathe on Kartika Purnima.

Every year on the full moon of Kartika, Hindus come from all over India to cleanse their sins in the lake. Pushkar is one of the five pilgrimage places or in other words it is also known as dham that are held in high esteem by Hindus, the others being Rameswaram, Puri, Badrinath, and Dwarka. There is a story revealed about Pushkar and it beauty is: In battle lord Brahma killed the demon Vajra Nabh with a lotus flower, whose petals floated down to earth and landed in three places in and around Pushkar where lakes sprang up. According to legends, Pushkar Lake was surrounded by 500 temples and 52 palaces where several rajas and maharajas maintained palaces here for pilgrimage at one point.

Major highlights of this festival are different types of competitions such as longest moustache, matka phod, and bridal competitions. Recently there are some new competitions included in this fair like an exhibition of cricket match between the team of random foreign tourists and the local Pushkar club. A camel race starts off the festival, with music, songs and exhibitions to follow. Between these events, the most awaited moment will be test of how the camel is able to bring the items. In order to demonstrate, the men go up on the group of camels one after another.

In early 1900s, the attendances of 100,000 pilgrims are recorded by Imperial Gazetteer of India. For the visitors, it is an unparalleled and unforgettable experience to capture the vibrancy of the entire state of Rajasthan in one place. This year it is hoped that alike of every year this year also Pushkar camel fair will rock and all the visitors and pilgrims will be blessed by Lord Brahma.
