Put Forward A Professional Appearance For Your Job Hunt
Sometimes we like to pretend that looks doesn't matter much in our politically-correct society
. But the more we try to convince ourselves of that, the more we are telling internal lies.
Now, when I say that, I am not trying to push you into spending gobs of money on plastic surgery--I am just trying to remind you that especially in this economic climate, it is important to put forward a professional appearance at all times, particularly when you are hunting for employment. Let me give you some pointers to help you do just that.
First of all, you need to maintain good hygiene, regardless of what's trendy or what kind of work you are looking for. This applies to both men and women. It might seem unmanly to pluck your eyebrows, but a potential new boss is not going to warm up to you as quickly as they might if you have a glaring uni-brow overshadowing your otherwise wonderful eyes.
Make sure to brush or comb your hair away from your face to keep it from distracting either you or the interviewer. Persistent gestures--such as swiping your bangs behind your ear over and over--may become distracting and even annoying to someone interviewing you, so try to minimize the possibility of that happening. You can still get creative with your hairstyle, just keep it out of your face.
Pay particular attention to oral hygiene. Contact your dentist to schedule a cleaning and consider whitening your teeth. After all, one of the best things you can do to make a great first impression is show a dazzling smile.
Don't forget mouthwash before the big interview, but avoid chewing gum during the process. This is another distracter that you don't want interfering. Plus, it tends to make your speech a little sloppy.
Instead, stick with any pointers your dentist gives you, and bring along a bottle of water to combat dry mouth, which can result from either nervousness or the effects of prescription medications.
You will probably fill out at least a dozen applications before you get a hit, but you should make sure that you are dressed professionally when you do show up and ask to fill one out. You may be lucky enough to be asked for an interview right away, or you may receive the application from the person who would be interviewing you down the road.
They will not be impressed if you come slouching in dressed in torn jeans and a stained tee-shirt. So you should dress in professional attire whenever you are expecting to ask for applications. Don't forget to keep resumes in hand and references on file. Good luck!
