Putting Sleep Disorders To Bed

Sleep disorders are not something that only a few unlucky people in the UK suffer from

, its present in some form in almost every household. Its so common that treatments are widely available on the NHS, private healthcare and from alternative therapists all over the country and range from prescription medication to counselling and acupuncture.

There are many symptoms that make up what we and the experts know as sleep disorders and the important thing to remember when reading this is that if you recognise one or more of the symptoms talked about but you generally sleep well, not to get hung up on it. Its only when a few or all of these come together and youre really suffering because of it that you might want to seek advice.

Common symptoms of any sleep disorders include difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep, tiredness, lack of energy, irritability, snoring, restlessness, sleep walking, muscle tension, stress and night sweats. Some or all of these can be a sign that you are suffering from a degree of insomnia and you will know if you do because you will become increasingly frustrated at the inability to have a full and satisfying nights sleep.

Insomnia in its many forms can be caused by a particularly stressful job or lifestyle, personal problems, injury or muscle or joint pain or a bad pillow, mattress and bed base and all of these things can be addressed as soon as they are pinpointed as the cause. You can normally self diagnose simply by noting down your symptoms and your day to day activities and stresses for a few days until you find a pattern. There are of course doctors and sleep experts who would help you to diagnose these things too.

Its important to deal with the components of a sleep disorder and not try to tackle it in its entirety, after all thats when people resort to medication and sleeping pills which are known to be detrimental in some cases. Instead of reaching for the pills, think about the reasons why you might be stressed or why youre in pain and deal with those issues, if theres more than one issue, deal with them separately. If you have pain anywhere in the body its usually a good idea to start with that as chronic pain can be a cause of stress in itself.
