Qantas Airline Takes Action Against Rolls Royce

flights to Sydney operator Qantas Airline, has announced its plans to sue Rolls Royce

, the Airbus A380 maker to recover the loses the airline faced after grounding its Airbus A380 fleet following an engine fire last month.

Qantas has recently filed a legal claim against Rolls Royce, as investigations post midair engine troubles indicate a manufacturing fault. Initial reports also pointed in the direction that one of the three engines may have failed in air causing smoke incident that forced an emergency landing on one of the Airbus A380 aircraft operated by Qantas Airline. Media reports, released earlier today also state that problems within the QF32 Trent 900 engine, manufactured by Rolls Royce company, forced the airline to ground its entire Airbus A380 fleet.

Confirming the legal action, Qantas Airline said in a statement:

Today's action allows Qantas to keep all options available to the company to recover losses, as a result of the grounding of the A380 fleet and the operational constraints currently imposed on A380 services.

However, the airline has also clearly expressed that todays court filing is not to effect its relations and continuing business with Rolls Royce. Qantas said it remains committed to working with Rolls-Royce on the Trent 900 inspection program, in consultation with Airbus and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

There are also great possibilities that Qantas may not have to use all open options as the airline has also started talks with Rolls Royce directly, on the "financial and operational impacts" of the incident, which could end in a commercial settlement between the two parties.

Further, Qantas has also said:

In line with its conservative approach to operational safety, Qantas is voluntarily suspending A380 services on routes that regularly require use of maximum certified engine thrust and will do so until further operational experience is gained or possible additional changes are made to engines.

BACKGROUND

Earlier this month, a mid air engine trouble on a Qantas flight to Sydney from Singapore caused emergency landing, followed by similar incidents of smoke, flame or sparks with many other Airbus A380 engines resulting in grounding of the entire fleet consisting of six Super Jumbo Airbus A380 manufactured by Rolls Royce. Although, fortunately no collateral damage occurred due to any of the landings but the airline faces a tough time coupling with holiday season traffic without its six superjumbo Airbus A380. Later, after weeks of investigations Qantas started sent two of its A380s back in air on November 27th. To ensure flight safety, Qantas CEO also traveled to Singapore on the same resuming flight. However, the other four Qantas Airline Airbus A380 aircraft remain grounded.
