The traditional way to distinguish quartzite from sandstone is that unlike sandstone, quartzite breaks through, not around, the quartz grains, producing a smooth surface instead of a rough and granular one.

Quartzite are snowy white, less often pink or gray. Quartzite stone generally has blocky structure, which contains small amounts of feldspar, mica stone, amphibole, pyroxene, etc. They yield a thin and very barren soil and people usually find them in hills and mountains and can be used as building materials or railway ballast stone.
