Queen Elizabeth National Park Safari In Uganda

Queen Elizabeth National Park is situated on the floor of the Great Rift Valley between Lakes Edward and George

. This park has an area of 1078 square kilometers and was opened in 1952. The adventures found in the park include a wide variety of wildlife and about 612 species of birds. These greatly depend on the mosaic plants from the two neighboring lakes. The park has a mixture of vegetation which ranges from bushy grassland, forest, Acacia woodland and lake swamp vegetation. Some of the wild animals found in the park include; elephant, lion, Ugandan knob, Cape buffalo, leopard, hyena, warthog and giant forest hog.

The Kazinga Channel which is 40km long connects Lake George to Lake Edward. It is an ideal habitat to many crocodiles, fish, birds and mammals. The key bird species include the kingfisher, eagle, African Morning dove, African skimmer, bee-eater, African fish eagle and many others. About 95 mammal species have also been recorded in this park. Queen Elizabeth National Park receives an average maximum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius and minimum of18 degrees Celsius. It has an altitude of 910m above sea level at Lake Edward and 1815m at the top of the escarpment of the western rift.

Queen Elizabeth National Park was preserved to protect the wild animals, birds, wetlands and the natural beauty. There are eleven fishing villages within the park where the Banyankole Bakiga and Bakonjyo community live. The melting glacier waters from the Ruwenzori Mountains are the main source of water to Lake Edward and Lake George. These are channeled by the mighty Kazinga Channel which flows to River Ishasha. Many hippos are seen resting along these lakeshores. A safari to this park will be a great adventure due to the various attractions found in the park.

Some of the activities involved in this park include game viewing, bird watching and photographing. You can also have short guided walks in the Maramagambo Forest where you will have an opportunity to see various types of birds and the chimpanzees. Due to the wide variety of bird species, Queen Elizabeth National park is also called the birders paradise. You will also be lucky to see bats in the caves which are great enemies to the birds. A boat trip along the Kazinga Channel will give you a chance to see many large hippos and crocodiles along the bank. You also get to see buffalos and elephants. In addition, you can also visit the salt mines and learn how salt is mined. The salt is mined from salt ore and then transported to various towns in Uganda.
