Queensland Tender for Gold Coast Rapid Transit Project

Queensland Tender for Gold Coast Rapid Transit Project

A Queensland tender has been called for consultancy for phase 2 of the Gold Coast Rapid Transit corridor study.

The Gold Coast Rapid Transit project aims to reduce congestion and improve public transport services on the Gold Coast through the provision of a light rail system. The project is being delivered by the Queensland Government through the Department of Transport and Main Roads in partnership with the Australian Government and Gold Coast City Council. Stage One of project has secured funding commitments totalling of AUD$949.

Stage One of the project which totals 13 km, will service the new Gold Coast University Hospital, Griffith University, Southport medical precinct and the fast growing commercial, retail and recreational centres of Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach via 16 stations.

Three Consortia have been short listed for stage 1 which includes:

- GC Connect: composed of MTR Corporation, John Holland Pty Ltd, ITOCHU Corporation and RBS Group (Australia) Pty Ltd

- GoldlinQ: composed of Keolis SA, Downer EDI Ltd, Bombardier Transportation Australia Pty Ltd, McConnell Dowell Constructors Pty Ltd and Plenary Group Pty Ltd

- Move GC: composed of Veolia, Leighton Contractors, Alstom and Macquarie.

Federal Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese said the light rail project is the biggest transport infrastructure project ever undertaken on the Gold Coast."We are fortunate to be choosing from among the world's best and I am confident all three will provide competitive and innovative bids that will deliver a first-class light rail system for the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke said the successful bidder awarded the right to run the system will become a vital part of the growing Gold Coast community." The need for staff to operate and maintain the system will create jobs long after the construction is completed," he said. Delivery of Stage One is scheduled for 2014.

Potential future stages of the project include:

- the corridor heading north from Griffith University to Helensvale.

- the corridor heading south from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads

- the corridor from Burleigh Heads to Coolangatta.

The Queensland Government and Gold Coast City Council have endorsed Olsen Avenue/Brisbane Road as the preferred route connecting Griffith University to Helensvale. Deciding on the preferred route to Helensvale has enabled detailed planning of Stage One in particular, the point at which Stage One will link with the Helensvale route at Griffith University (Parklands Drive Southport).

At this point in time, only high-level conceptual planning has been undertaken for the potential Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads corridor.

The Queensland tender for consultancy for phase 2 of the Gold Coast Rapid Transit corridor study will close on the 13th July 2010.
