Questions For The Piano Dealer
The piano dealer is a person who sells or leases pianos
. His or her showroom often has an array of instruments to check out as well as accessories to purchase such as metronomes, sheet music, books of songs, and benches or seats for sitting on while playing a keyboard of some sort. These stores may also have space for piano teachers to give lessons to individual students or groups of them. Some teachers may travel to students' homes or schools to give the lessons. Here are some questions commonly asked of this musical professional:
- What types of pianos are there? There are Uprights, also referred to as Verticals, and Grands or Baby Grands. There are also digital and electric versions of this popular instrument. They range in size from 36-38 inches tall for Spinets to nearly ten feet long for Grands. Some of the "in between" sizes are Studio Uprights and Consoles which range from 40 to 45 inches.
- What musical classification does it fall into? There is some debate about whether pianos are string or percussion instruments. They're actually a combination of the two. Strings play a part because that's where the musical tone starts off. Percussion is also partially true because there are hammers initiating musical vibrations in the strings.
- Is it better to buy or rent an instrument? It depends on the circumstances. If a child is learning to play, it may be wise to start with a rental in order to make sure the youngster will be sticking with it before purchasing an instrument. Another option is buying a used piano. There are many perfectly good instruments that have been previously owned. Some older pianos are of such high quality that they are even better than new models once they've been tuned up and refurbished.
- When were these instruments invented? Bortolomeo Cristofori invented the first one is 1700 which was originally called a pianoforte. The word "pianoforte" means soft-loud and was modeled after the earlier clavichord and harpsichord.
- How old should a child be before starting lessons? This will depend on the child. Some lessons are successful with youngsters as young as four years of age but this is rare. In order for a student to be able to master this instrument, he or she must be able to sit attentively for a period of time, read, to a certain extent, and have large enough hands to span the keys. An optimum age is in elementary school when the child has demonstrated interest as well as responsibility. Some tots take to music lessons like a fish to water while others can't play well after years of lessons. It's wise to experiment. The teacher will also make a big difference. Instructors should be competent, know how to teach others rather than simply play the instrument, and be patient and encouraging.
Your local piano dealer is a wealth of information, products and service. Not only will he or she have musical instruments to select form, the dealer will also have expertise, teachers on staff, movers to transport your new Upright or Grand into your home and tuners to tune it up.
