Questions That Help Your Doctor Determine If A Hearing Aid Is Right For You

Your initial appointment with the audiologist will be full of questions

. You'll have questions for the doctor, and he or she will have questions for you. The answers to these questions will help this professional determine whether a hearing aid could be an effective means of treatment for your hearing loss.

In the weeks before your appointment, think about these questions:

How Would You Describe Your Symptoms?

Do they include ringing, roaring, or hissing in your ears? Do you frequently experience dizziness or other balance problems? How about the onset of these symptoms? Do they come on suddenly or have they gradually become a problem? Do any of your symptoms include pain within your affected ear?

What is Your Medical History?

Have you ever experienced chronic ear infections? Did you sustain ear injury or trauma during sports or another activity? Have you ever had any surgeries that could have affected your ears or the effectiveness of a hearing aid? What medications, vitamins, or supplements are you currently taking?

What about Your Work History?

Have you worked in a noisy environment? Does your current job expose you to loud noises without ear protection? Have any previous jobs exposed you to loud environments? Do you wear ear protection when you know that you'll be exposed to loud noises for an extended period of time? Do you travel by airplane often? Have you been engaged in military combat?

Does Your Family History Include Hearing Loss?

Are any of your close relatives affected by this condition? What types of loss have they experienced? Did hearing aid treatment improve their quality of life?

What Current Hearing Frustrations Are You Experiencing?

Is it hard to carry on a conversation because you constantly have to ask others to repeat themselves? Do you have trouble carrying on a phone conversation because you can't understand the person on the other end of the line? Do you struggle to follow a conversation that involves more than one person? Is it impossible to carry on a conversation in areas with lots of background noise, like restaurants or sports events?

Is your condition affecting the relationships you have with others, both family members and close friends? Does your family constantly complain that you turn up the volume too high when you watch television or listen to the radio? Can you hear a family member approaching you, or are you startled when they say your name?

Are You Willing to Correct or Improve the Problem?

Would you be willing to undergo testing? Would you be open to wearing a hearing aid in order to improve your ear function?

Your doctor will probably address many of these questions. Thinking through them before you appointment will ensure that your appointment is very informative, both for you and your doctor.
