People are different. That is why when you choose to share a flat or a room with someone, be prepared to accept certain differences. But the key is to make sure that these differences do not become large enough to cause discomfort and make sharing a home impossible. To avoid such scenarios, it is advised to thoroughly interview potential roommates. Here is a set of questions you can ask people who respond to your advert of flatmate wanted:
What are your usual timings? You dont want to be stuck with someone who has to leave for work when you are in the middle of your sleep; or if he plays the cello for an hour before going to bed at three in the morning. The point is to make sure the comings and goings as well as sleeping times of the flatmate should not hamper your schedule.
Are you a smoker? This question is important for the ones who dont smoke. If you are strictly against smoking roommates, you can reject candidates right away. If you have decided to be comfortable with a smoker, try to understand their smoking frequency and may be allot a certain area of the home/flat where they can smoke anytime without bothering you.
Would you bring a girlfriend/boyfriend over? This question kind of works both ways. You and the roommate both should be aware of the frequency of the visits of both your partners. So that you can be out of the flat or not venture out of your room when the roomie is with his significant other and similarly he can be out of your hair as well when your partner is in the flat.
Do you like pets? This is important to ask him if you have a pet and let it roam free in the house. Also, you should let them know if you are okay with them having pets in the house. Whoever decides to keep the pet, it is advisable to draw a list of pet care tasks and set up house rules regarding the pets.
Would your friends be over? Sure everyone is friendly and loves to hang out with friends, but ensure your roommate is not in the habit of having loud noisy friends all the time, even when you have an important project to finish or have a paper due. Discuss beforehand the frequency of friends (yours and his) visits and also the activity they all will engage in. If you are studying in a med school, you dont need a drummer roomie and his band friends practicing every night.
How will we share the bills? Getting money issues sorted is really important. Discuss how will you split the power/water bill or grocery bills or the internet and cable costs. A clear discussion about who will pay and when and how must be done to avoid any unpleasant scenes later.
What about food? Clarify cooking responsibilities and decide on how the cook or tiffin service will be paid if you plan to hire them.
