Quick Look At Canon Rebel T4i Upgrades

At first peek, the youngest camera in the Canon Rebel lineup

, the T4i (aka 650D) looks identical to the older and extremely well-liked Rebel T3i (aka 600D). However, if you look closer, you will find that there are differences, some of which could be game changers for the new camera buyer.

You have to "go under the hood" to see the most dynamic changes. However, before getting into the techy stuff, there are some things to observe on the camera body. You will have to find the name on the front of the camera to know which Rebel it actually is. Take a look down at the top of the camera. Look at the mode dial. It is different.

Observe that there are two new modes. First there is Hand-held Night mode, and second is HDR with Backlight mode.

The first new mode, "Hand-held Night" should be easy to figure out. You can take pictures in challenging light conditions with more pleasing results than in previous versions.

"HDR with Backlighting" is something that manufacturers have been adding to camera software only recently. High dynamic range in-camera software is very cool. It combines 3 exposures of the same photograph into a single picture with a wider range of light information. Since HDR is becoming very popular, this feature should be a hit with lots of new buyers.

"Under the hood" of the new T4i, there is a brand new image processor, the DIGIC 5. This is the first processor upgrade in quite some time. However, Canon has announced that this upgraded piece of hardware has 4 times the processing power of the DIGIC 4.

The Canon CMOS 18-megapixel sensor has not changed in size over the span of quite a few releases. Not only is this sensor in the latest Rebel models, but it is also the sensor of record in more professional models such as the Canon 60D and 7D.

But sensor size is not the key here. The engineering of the sensor has been improved. Does "hybrid CMOS AF sensor" make an impression on you? According to Canon, it is much better at recognizing focus such as face detection and continuous focus in Live View. On a personal note, I have noticed a huge difference here between my T3i and my new T4i.

Here is a first from Canon. Touch-screen LCD technology is the newest cutting-edge feature for the Canon Rebel T4i. This is very cool, and it will entice some of you tekky folks with iPhone-like actions such as pinch to enlarge and swipe through your images by moving your finger across the LCD panel. Not only that, you can now select settings by touch. You don't have to learn which button to push or which direction to go using the myriad of selectors on the right side of the LCD screen.

Another improvement is the enhanced ISO. On the T3i, ISO max is 12800, but on the T4i that number has doubled to 25600.

Yet another improvement is in the continuous shooting rate. This is how fast the camera can take pictures, and it comes into play during photos of kids sports (or any sports, for that matter) or photographing your pet or your children playing. Here are the numbers: 5.0fps for the T4i and 3.7fps for the T3i.

The list does not stop there. The focus system has also received major attention as it has been upgraded from one cross-type focus point to 9 cross-type focus points. This focus system is similar to cameras that are considered in the pro and semi-pro range of digital SLRs.

There are three things to study with respect to improved video operation when considering the T4i VS T3i.

* The T4i now has continuous auto focus in video mode. This is huge if you are one who shoots a lot of video.

* The second point also has to do with focus. It is "touch screen" focus while in video mode. Just touch the the screen where you want the camera to focus, and the camera does a great job of keeping that point in focus.

* Additionally, there is also enhanced audio input. There are now two stereo mics repositioned on top of the digital slr to detect sound much better. The photographer can also alter the sound input level, which is a first for a Canon Rebel camera.

In general, the new Rebel T4i is lookin' pretty darn good.
