If you want to make a quilt or purchase one but do not have an idea on where to begin

, you can start by understanding what quilts really are. In addition, it is best to understand the jargon that comes along with it so that you dont go about making or purchasing quilts blindly. Here are some of the most basic and most important things that you should know.

Quilts Defined

Quilts are basically bed covers or blankets. These are mostly hand-woven and even though some manufacture these in bulk, a lot of people still prefer the hand-woven ones. This is because nothing beats the quality and the sense of uniqueness that comes along with it. Quilting is the process of making quilts. It is essentially the technique of joining 2 layers of fabric through stitches.

3 Layers of Quilts

Quilts consist of 3 layers which include the woven cloth top, wadding and woven back. The woven cloth top has the most decorations or designs. Wadding is like a filling which is placed between the woven cloth top and the woven back. The most common used material for this is cotton. The woven back is usually a single block of fabric. There are some people who choose to make quilts with both sides decorated.

Patchwork

This is usually how people decorate the woven cloth top. This is the process of assembling in blocks of fabric together which creates that decorative woven cloth top. There are some who use various blocks of fabric for this while some prefer to have identical fabric blocks for the patchwork.

Sashing

In relation to the patchwork, some people stitch these blocks of fabric to each other. However, some people prefer to have some sort of border surrounding these blocks. This is what sashing is. It is the fabric strip that is placed in between the patchwork blocks to separate the blocks from each other. Think of it as lines that go in between the blocks of fabric.

These are just some of the terms that you need to know in terms of quilts. Whether you are purchasing one or making one, it helps to know the different parts of the quilt as it allows you to make an informed decision. There are still various terms that one must study in terms of quilts and these are the technique terms such as appliqu, trapunto and more. However, these quilt jargons are not essential or basic but if you wish to make quilts of your own, these are not just something that you should read about but learn, hands-on.
