Quirky Ways To Use The Garden Shed!

Dads and grandads have traditionally disappeared after dinner to their little sheds

hidden away at the bottom of the garden and this is how most people think of them. Moths and spiders stand in the company forgotten garden tools. But that will soon change thanks to the winner of the 2010 Shed of the Year contest.

In Southend-on-sea in Essex, one man has turned his humble garden shed into a pirate's paradise called The Lady Sarah out of Worthing. In the competition judged by Sarah Beeny and the founder of readersheds.co.uk, The Lady Sarah beat off 1,250 other UK sheds, after years of work. Boasting its own Koi Carp pond with decking and barrel bar stools, the Lady Sarah has its own resident parrot, and is decorated with anchors, skulls and rum bottles.

Other sheds are also attracting attention from The Lady Sarah at the moment. Boasting a full bar, karaoke, pool table, plasma screen television and fruit machine, The White Witch pub shed has seen so many visitors that owner Ian Johnstone of London has had to extend it twice to accommodate the crowds!

One UK shed fanatic, as a tribute to his wife, turned his garden shed into Dr Who's tardis from the TV show, while Chris Almond of Derbyshire made his very own Hobbit hole from J.R. Tolkiens Lord of the Rings trilogy by building his shed into a hillside, proving that the garden shed can also be a tribute to a favourite TV show or book.

The disco shed, however, is proving to be the most popular whimsical shed. Featuring a rooftop screen, DJ's and a full light show, the disco shed has appeared at Latitude festival, as well as private events and various London pubs. The 8x6 garden shed has been featured on BBC 6 music and in the Guardian. For a humble garden shed that's not bad.
