Quit Smoking with Nicotine Gum

Congratulations! If you're reading this, you're probably thinking about giving up smoking. Most of us have learnt about what effects smoking has on our lungs, blood supply, heart and the debilitating effect it has on most of your body. So why do we still smoke? It's an addiction, so some people find it very easy to quit, but lots of people do not. Deciding to stop is the first very important step. The next one is deciding how you want to achieve this.

There are a number of cessation aids and a very popular nicotine replacement therapy is the use of nicotine gum. This is a type of chewing gum which releases nicotine into the body as it is chewed, slowly releasing it into the bloodstream via tissue in your mouth.

Nicotine gum is now available over the counter in pharmacies all over Europe, the United States and many other countries around the world. It comes in a variety of flavours in a bid to appeal to most people who are trying to stop smoking. They contain a nicotine content of either 2 or 4mg (one or two cigarettes' worth), so that heavier smokers can start their smoking withdrawal by replacing it with roughly the same amount of nicotine they would normally consume. As you continue the therapy, you gradually reduce the amount of gum you chew as well as going onto a lower dosage.

When using the nicotine gum it is wise to follow the instructions carefully, otherwise they can have adverse reactions, such as making you feel nauseous if you chew the gum more than advised. Users are only supposed to chew it until it softens. This will be when it produces a peppery taste or sometimes a tingling sensation. You must then keep the gum to one side of your mouth between the cheek and gums. As the tingling dissipates, you can chew the gum again and put it in a different part of your mouth. You continue to chew the nicotine gum in this way until all the nicotine has gone, or the craving is satiated. This is roughly thirty minutes. The gum should only be used for up to twelve weeks with a formula of approximately one piece to be chewed every one to two hours for the first six weeks. This gradually decreases in the remaining weeks so that in the last two weeks you should only be chewing one piece every four to eight hours. Light smokers should use the 2mg types and heavy smokers the 4mg with the same chewing formula for both. It has been advised that pregnant woman should not use any form nicotine replacement therapy.

If used for too long, nicotine gum (and other nicotine replacement therapies) has been associated with the contraction of oral cancer. Side effects can include hiccups and a feeling of constriction of the throat when too much nicotine tainted saliva is accidentally swallowed. As well as this, there is the risk of gum disease.
