The R4i Card is a storage device, which is rewritable in nature. Earlier all R4 Card users had to delete their old games in order to download latest versions or new games in their console, as there was limited storage capacity provided. However, now with these R4i Card the users can download and store a wide number of games, their newer versions, additions, etc. without deleting your older favourites.R4 cards are basically not themselves a storage device but a type of adapter that has a SLOT1 at their back where a MICRO SDHC card is inserted. This micro SDHC card is where all the data is stored.

The R4i Card is the same size as a regular Nintendo Ds or Dsi cartridge. There is a slot at the back of the R4 card for a Micro-SDHC card. Into the Micro-SDHC card goes firmware, games, applications, MP3s etc. that you would like insert your R4i Card. You will then get a menu on your R4 card upon booting up your Nintendo Ds or Dsi R4. This menu will allow you to choose from Games or Multimedia Tool. You can then proceed to play home-brew games (or even backup games that you already legally own) or MP3s or Video Songs!
